Handling & Use Requirements

Equipment must be used within rated load capacities and installed on suitable warehouse flooring. Improper loading, uneven distribution, or use outside intended applications can result in structural failure.

Inspect all shipments upon delivery and note any freight damage before signing. Installation and final configuration should be verified by qualified personnel to ensure safe operation.

Delivery & Freight Shipping

All equipment ships via LTL or dedicated freight carriers and is delivered curbside or dock-high depending on facility setup. Liftgate service is not included unless specifically requested at the time of quote.

You are responsible for unloading the shipment and must have appropriate equipment (forklift or dock access) available at delivery. Failure to meet delivery requirements may result in re-delivery fees.

Inspect all items upon arrival before signing the Bill of Lading. Any visible damage must be noted at delivery—claims cannot be processed after acceptance without documentation.

Lead times vary based on product type, configuration, and supplier availability. You will receive confirmation of estimated ship dates after order review.

Description

Heavy-Duty Perforated Steel Decking for Pallet Rack Systems

The 36" x 24" Punched Steel Deck provides a flat, perforated steel storage surface for pallet rack systems where airflow, fire-code compliance, drainage, and hand-stacked inventory support are required. With a 2200 lb uniform distributed load capacity and 50% open surface area, this decking is commonly used in warehouse storage, carton storage, cold storage, small-parts handling, and inventory environments where wire mesh decking creates stability or containment issues.

Unlike wire mesh decking, punched steel decking creates a snag-free surface that improves support for cartons, bins, and hand-stacked inventory while helping prevent small parts from falling through open wire gaps. The galvanized steel construction also improves corrosion resistance and simplifies cleaning in dusty or moisture-sensitive environments.

This deck is designed for pallet rack beam-supported applications and can also be used in compatible boltless, clip-style, and wide-span shelving systems. The perforated open-surface design supports airflow and sprinkler penetration requirements commonly associated with NFPA 13-compliant rack layouts.

Note: Do not use punched steel decking for concentrated point loads, unsupported spans, forklift impact zones, or applications exceeding published uniform load capacities without engineering review.

Best Fit Applications

This punched steel decking is commonly used in:

  • Standard warehouse pallet rack systems
  • Hand-stacked carton storage
  • Small-part inventory storage
  • Distribution center shelving
  • Cold storage and freezer applications
  • Retail inventory storage
  • Medical and plumbing supply storage
  • Automotive parts storage
  • Records and archival storage

It is best suited for facilities requiring airflow, drainage, fire-code-conscious storage layouts, improved small-item retention, smooth hand-stacking surfaces, and corrosion-resistant steel shelving surfaces.

When Not to Use Punched Steel Decking

Punched steel decking is not appropriate for every rack environment.

  • Do not use for concentrated point loads unless specifically engineered.
  • Do not use on unsupported rack spans outside manufacturer specifications.
  • Do not use for high-impact forklift contact zones.
  • Do not use for seismic applications requiring engineered certification without project review.
  • Do not exceed published uniform distributed load capacities.
  • Do not use as a substitute for structural rack bracing.

Larger punched deck sizes provide wider surface coverage but lower pounds-per-square-foot load ratings. Dense or heavy inventory should use smaller deck sizes with higher structural capacity.

Key Features

  • Flat, snag-free steel surface for hand-stacked inventory
  • Stronger load support than standard wire mesh decking
  • 50% open surface area for airflow and sprinkler penetration
  • Helps prevent small items from falling through the deck surface
  • Corrosion-resistant galvanized steel construction
  • Compatible with pallet rack beam systems
  • Can be used with boltless, clip-style, and wide-span shelving
  • Easier to clean than wire mesh decking
  • Reduces dust and debris accumulation
  • Supports up to 250 lbs per square foot uniform distributed load depending on deck size

📚 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is punched steel decking stronger than wire mesh decking?

Punched steel decking provides a more rigid surface for hand-stacked inventory and dense cartons. Wire mesh decking may flex more under heavy uniform loads.

Can punched steel decking be used in cold storage or freezer environments?

Yes. The perforated open surface improves airflow and drainage, helping reduce moisture and ice buildup in cold storage applications.

Does punched steel decking meet fire code requirements?

The 50% open surface design supports NFPA 13 sprinkler penetration requirements. Final fire-code approval must always be verified for the specific rack layout and facility.

Should heavy inventory use larger punched deck sizes?

No. Larger deck sizes have lower pounds-per-square-foot load ratings. Dense or heavy inventory should use smaller deck configurations with higher structural capacity.

Can punched steel decking support concentrated point loads?

No. Published capacities apply to uniform distributed loads only. Concentrated point loads require application-specific engineering review before use.
